In residential construction, there are two main types of foundations: the full-slab foundation (Beta Foundation) and the strip foundation.
At KAⅡ Design & Work, we adopt full-slab foundations and recommend them as an effective way to protect homes from termite damage and moisture issues.
What Is a Full-Slab Foundation (Beta Foundation)?
A full-slab foundation integrates the ground-supporting base and the vertical foundation walls into a single reinforced concrete structure.
By supporting the building across the entire surface area, loads are evenly distributed, resulting in superior earthquake resistance.
This foundation method became widely adopted after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and is now commonly used in wooden homes across Japan.
Because the entire ground beneath the floor is covered with thick concrete, it prevents moisture from rising from the soil, reducing the risk of wood decay.
It also makes it difficult for termites and pests to enter the structure.
What Is a Strip Foundation?
A strip foundation is a foundation type in which only the vertical supporting portions are constructed with reinforced concrete.
Although it appears similar to a full-slab foundation, a strip foundation supports the building at specific points rather than across the entire surface.
As a result, earthquake resistance is lower, increasing the risk of partial settlement and building tilt.
Compared to full-slab foundations, ground humidity tends to rise more easily, increasing the risk of wood decay and termite damage.

In addition to using a full-slab foundation, KAⅡ Design & Work incorporates environmentally friendly moisture- and termite-resistant sheets.
It is said that dozens of liters of water vapor can rise from exposed ground each day.
This means the risk of decay, mold, and termite infestation can never be completely eliminated.
To address this, we lay moisture- and termite-resistant sheets beneath the foundation and pour reinforced concrete on top, creating a double-layer protection system that further enhances durability.
We do not use commonly applied soil insecticide treatments, as they may cause soil contamination and pose risks to human health.
Instead, we prevent termites and moisture using methods that are both environmentally friendly and highly effective.
